GDPR became law on 25 May 2016, with a two-year ‘transition period’ to let businesses adjust, meaning there’s less than a year until GDPR comes into force. The new regulation includes 160 requirements governing everything from how data is collected, to how to notify people about data breaches.
Every business must be GDPR-compliant by 25 May 2018. Unlike previous regulations, the fines are more than a ‘slap on the wrist’; the worst offenders could face a fine of €20 million or 4 per cent of turnover. The good news is that Microsoft is upgrading its cloud services to provide full support for GDPR.
