Two new types of usage report – for Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Search – are being rolled out to Microsoft 365 in February 2021. Here’s what you need to know.
Microsoft Teams usage report
Admins will be able to find a new Microsoft Teams usage activity report in the usage reports section of the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre.
The report gathers together data from across your organisation’s use of Microsoft Teams, and reveals useful information both at an overall (tenant) level, and on a team-by-team level. This gives you a ‘big picture’ view of how your organisation is making use of Teams.
The Teams Usage Activity Report started rolling out in January, and everyone should have it by early February 2021.
Microsoft Search usage report
Admins will soon also gain an additional usage report, this one focusing on use of Microsoft Search across your organisation. Data about search requests made from the search box on your SharePoint homepage and on Office.com will be available in the Admin Centre.
Daily data from each day of the previous month, and monthly data for the past year, will be shown to Search administrators. The new Microsoft Search usage report is rolliing out now and should be available to everyone by the end of January 2021.
What are Microsoft 365 usage reports for?
Usage reports enable your administrators to discover useful information about how Microsoft 365 features are being used across your organisation. This makes it easier to decide which features are being used, and where people need more support or better training. It’s also useful for internal comms teams to know the kind of things people are searching for, and address them.
They generally can’t be used to identify indivudals’ behaviour – something Microsoft rightly received negative press coverage for last year, when it briefly became possible to see individuals’ usage of Microsoft 365 apps and features.
